‘An Understanding of Form - principles for making strong sculpture’

Using various materials, a series of exercises devised from those at the former Frink School that would have been the sort of thing experienced by Moore and Hepworth as students, before conceptual art blurred the boundaries and took the emphasis away from form and mass

suitable equally for beginners or those with some experience


10/10/15 and 17/10/15, 10am-1pm: Wood Carving Master Class with Rolf Hook; £40

Rolf is an established sculptor in wood, he makes small and large indoor and outdoor sculptures (such as the two yew pieces in Out Of Nature). He will share his intimate knowledge of wood (acquired through 7 years of training in Germany in fine wood working and sculpting) and cover all the aspects of producing a sculpture: the grain, texture, how to create interesting shapes, how to play with curves and lines and how to produce a specific texture and a final professional finish. In creating his bowl sculptures he will demonstrate the correct and safe use of tools, ranging from simple hand tools for the beginner, to the wide range of tools and techniques for the more advanced wood worker.


10/10/15, 3pm-4.30pm: Edible Art for children; £10 (all ages, under 4 years old must be accompanied)

Make colourful paintings that look good, smell good and taste delicious! 14/10/15 and 21/10/15, 10.30am-12.30pm: expressive free sketching with Brontë Woodruff, £10 Come and free yourselves in an expressive drawing session of the sculptures at Out Of Nature.

16/1/16, 10am-4pm, wire workshop with Matt Lane Sanderson; £45 including lunch

School visits are encouraged and free of charge!
Picnic possible in the gardens (or under a shelter if needed). 
A guided visit is £30 (please book at jenny@thecartshed.co.uk), and a workshop
with an artist (soap carving, land art etc ..) can be organised for £130 (up to 30 children).

£10 per person, including food (prepared with produce from the garden) and drinks (locally sourced).

Nature activities for children (cooking on the fire, etc).  
Watch land artist Kate Raggett in action in the meadow, as well as Jon Edgar carving.  
Add your own touch to a large group-made land art shape on the bottom lawn.

October 4: Special H Energy fun day

£5 entry fee (free for children and students) 
Delicious food and drinks served in "the pub".  
Green wood work with Cart Shed leaders.  
Take part in a piece of land art.    
Carving by resident sculptor Jon Edgar.

Fun for children: nature activities, and be creative with recycled materials! 
£5 per child for any period of time between 12.30pm and 4.30pm. 

2pm: promenade performance by Gillian Hipp's students. Start at 2pm at the tree house!
3pm: talk by artist Glenn Morris on how his expeditions in the Arctic have
influenced his views on climate change, and his sculptures.
